“The man who tries to be good all the time is doomed to ruin among the countless others who are not good” - Niccolò Machiavelli
Everyone wants power. But few know what to do to achieve it. How can you get that long-awaited promotion? What can you do to win the admiration of your colleagues and neutralize those who are always trying to bring you down? How can you be the boss’s darling? In The 48 Laws of Power, the reader learns how to manipulate people and situations to achieve their goals. And understands why some people are so successful, while others are always being left behind.

Wanting to be better than your boss, for example, is a fatal mistake. “Make people above you feel comfortably superior (…) Make your masters seem more brilliant than they really are and you will reach the pinnacle of power”, says Robert Greene in the chapter “Don’t Outshine the Master”. “Do not compromise with anyone”, “Play the friend, act the spy” and “Totally annihilate the enemy” are some of the other laws analyzed by the author. In addition to offering the path to follow, he cites cases of success and failure revealed in the light of his rules. To illustrate what he says, Greene uses fables and real episodes from History, and uses and abuses quotations.

The reader delves into the primer through strategists such as Clausewitz and Sun-Tsu, statesmen such as Bismarck, seducers such as Casanova, philosophers such as Nietzsche, writers such as Balzac and, of course, diplomats such as Machiavelli. The texts cover a period of more than three thousand years and were selected from civilizations as different as ancient China and Renaissance Italy. The result is a kind of manual of the arts of dissimulation. Because the ability to control emotions is the basic foundation of power. Control your feelings and you will have the other person in your hands. “Power is a social game. To learn how to master it, you must develop the ability to study and understand people,” teaches the author.

And for those who understand that participating in power games is a complex activity, he issues a warning: There is no point in wanting to stay out. The world is like a huge and complex casino and we are all part of it. The sooner you understand the rules of the game, the greater your chances of success. “The better you deal with power, the better you will be as a person. (…) If the power game is inevitable, it is better to be an artist than to deny it or act non-strategically,” says Greene.
